A 1/3 scale model of a Fairbanks Morse Eclipse 1A stationary engine .

This is a 1/3 scale model of a Fairbanks Morse Eclipse 1A stationary engine circa 1940’s. The engine was commonly used on farms to provide power to pump water, saw wood or to to drive other equipment. The engine is commonly referred to as an Hit and Miss engine because of the way it runs. Once started the engine fires and gets up to speed (Hit). Once at speed the mechanical governor locks the exhaust valve open inhibiting the ability to create compression so the engine coasts (Miss). Once the speed falls blow the set point of the governor it releases the exhaust valve and the engine fires again one or more times until over speed again. The typical operating speed would be governed at about 700rpm.
